Will demonstrate course materials & methods offered in Music Appreciation, 3 credits, 1100-55; and America\'s Popular Music, 3 credits, 1050-55.

 

Room 3306                  Request for Institutional Change, Lessons Learned:  Shelley Bibeau, St. Paul College

Saint Paul College recently competed the process of request for institutional change with Minnesota Online. Colleagues

who participated in the process share their experiences and lessons learned.

 

Board Room –             Extending the Online Classroom: Resources and Tools

Few online courses take advantage of the online environment.  In the online environment, students can be offered drill-and-practice exercises, information can be presented to suit multiple learning-style preferences, learners can practice locating and using online resources (library databases, government websites, etc.), and students can have the option to create multimedia content in satisfying course learning objectives.  Taking advantage of the benefits online requires more faculty training materials, streaming media server capability, and better tools and processes to make content Section 508/WAI accessible.  The presentation will address tools that can be used at little or no cost and some strategies for development, to be followed by group discussion of issues, resources, and strategies.

 

            World Trade Room-    Merlot: An Innovative Approach to Teaching Distance

                                                Participants are encouraged to bring laptops to the

presentation.  Merlot can improve the quality of your on-line teaching and learning materials.  Participants will become familiar with the Merlot community portals that provide resources related to on-line teaching and learning.

Room 3304                  Serious Game Development in MnSCU:  John Heckman,   Johnson Simulation Center, Pine Technical College, Kenneth Hendrickson, St. Cloud State University

A short history and update of the CAN Game project along with demonstrations of games under development by the

JCVR, some explanation of our development process and approach to games and learning, and time for questions, advice, and feedback.

reach? How about not reinventing the wheel and working smarter not harder? This session will provide you with information and resources that may help you reach your goals or you could get inspired to share your information and resources with others.

4th Floor                      Working Together to Support Faculty Transitions to Online Instruction:  Sheri Steinke, North Hennepin CC, Deborah Proctor, Office of the Chancellor

Join a panel presentation focused on a discussion of assistance that faculty in transition from face-to-face to online may need.  These questions will be used to frame the discussion.

1. What would a good practice framework to support faculty include? 

2. What does it take to prepare faculty to teach online?

3. What will help faculty make a successful shift form teaching face-to-face online?

4. What systems, tools, and strategies are needed to support faculty development locally and systemically?

This session will provide information to serve college and university communities by supporting the assessment and improvement of teaching, learning, and administrative performance. This would be for AQIP folks and points to meeting Criterion 1.

This session will engage participants in the identification of patterns of retention data for online courses.  Roundtable discussions will lead to suggestions on how to bridge the

gap for online learners.

 

Room 3306                  2020 eLearning and Instructional Management Systems:  Lesley Blicker, Office of the Chancellor

Will present two powerful videos that should be shared with anyone involved in eLearning. These videos are oriented to 2020. A session will be given where these can be shown and discussed.

4th Floor                      Open Learning Partnership: Ohio Sakai and e-Portfolio Hosting:  Cable Green, Ohio Learning Network Forum

Ohio Learning Network and eTech Ohio are launching K-20 open source hosting services for Sakai and ePortfolio in 2007. Explore the benefits and challenges of creating a State solution and examine why open source may provide Ohio’s education community expanded choices in supporting learning and teaching.

Room 3304                  Wikis and Blogs and Pods! Oh My!   Barry Dahl, Lake Superior College

What do administrators and other educators need to know about the Read/Write Web where anyone can publish on the Internet? How can you use some of these tools in your work? How can faculty, staff, and students use these tools effectively and how can you encourage their use in a scholarly manner? If you've been hearing about Web 2.0 and want to learn more, then this is the session for you.

 

Room 3306                  Online Advisor:  A Prototype Tool for Advisors and Students:  Mark Swanson, Southeast Technical, Red Wing

                                                Online Advisor is a web-based application that helps students and advisors with most of the routine tasks involved in planning the student\'s schedule for the upcoming semester.  Based on the student\'s DARS (Degree Audio Reporting System) report, the program:
    * checks the schedule to determine which classes are offered that semester
    * checks current enrollment to determine whether each class is available
    * checks each course\'s prerequisites and co requisites to determine whether the student has met the requirements
    * lists prerequisite general education courses (such as Fundamental and Basic Math) that are required based on the student\'s placement scores.
    * gives easy access to complete course descriptions
    * if configured by the advisor, equivalent courses offered by other MnSCU schools can be displayed

4th Floor                        GPS LifePlan:  A Holistic Framework for Student Development:  Michele Jersak, Century College

GOAL+PLANS= SUCCESS:  This new initiative which began at Century College, facilitates the process of connecting students to services, faculty, and resources in order to help them achieve their personal and educational goals. Through a combination of online tools and traditional approaches, students explore seven categories of student development to reflect upon where they are now, where they want to go, and pathways to get from here to there.
