FINANCIAL PLANNING

In recent years I have had many requests from faculty members to recommend a financial planner to offer objective advice.  In response to requests from faculty, the MnSCU Defined Contribution Retirement (DCR) Advisory Committee, a faculty controlled advisory committee on retirement matters, decided to screen interested firms and recommend a financial planning service to faculty.  Following a thorough selection process, the committee decided on Academic Advisors, a division of AMG Advisors.  It was the advisory committee's opinion that, among the firms that came forward, Academic Advisors was the most knowledgeable firm with regard to state retirement plans and MnSCU specific retirement issues.  The committee also preferred Academic Advisors because they charge a flat fee of $125 per hour (it usually takes 2-3 hours of consultation) rather than an asset-under management fee, and because they do not sell products.

If you are interested in financial planning advice and would like to contact Academic Advisors, you can call them at 1-800-238-3381 or visit their web page at www.brendavis.com.  Academic Advisors is in the process of building a network of financial advisors to cover all of the MnSCU campuses.  To find out the names of the advisors covering your campus, check the web page mentioned above.

For reasons of legal liability, the IFO does not endorse or warrant any products or services, including those of Academic Advisors.  The IFO is simply providing the above advice as a service to members who may be interested.  The decision of whether or not to use the services of Academic Advisors is up to each individual member.
