In recent years I have had many requests from faculty members to recommend a financial planner to offer objective advice. In response to requests from faculty, the MnSCU Defined Contribution Retirement (DCR) Advisory Committee, a faculty controlled advisory committee on retirement matters, decided to screen interested firms and recommend a financial planning service to faculty. Following a thorough selection process, the committee decided on Academic Advisors, a division of AMG Advisors. It was the advisory committee's opinion that, among the firms that came forward, Academic Advisors was the most knowledgeable firm with regard to state retirement plans and MnSCU specific retirement issues. The committee also preferred Academic Advisors because they charge a flat fee of $125 per hour (it usually takes 2-3 hours of consultation) rather than an asset-under management fee, and because they do not sell products.
