IFO Coaches Caucus Meeting Recap

On February 16, 2018 the IFO held the first Coaches Caucus meeting. Below is a brief outline of the topics covered at the meeting.

Brent Jeffers reviewed the history for inclusion of coaches in the IFO bargaining unit

Brent Jeffers reviewed contract language relative to coaches and highlights of the 2017-2019 contract settlement related to coaches

Brent Jeffers reviewed Article 22 on professional development and evaluation

·      Jeffers reviewed Article 22 on professional development and evaluation

  1.   Handout: Article 22 Professional Development and Evaluation for Coaching Assignments, including examples of coach’s duties relevant to each of the 5 criteria

·      Discussion of the ways universities use Supplemental Pay (provided in Article 10, Section G, subd. 4.d)

·      2018 Delegate Assembly New Resolutions Related to Athletic Appointments:

  1.   On Promotion - After 5 years as an Instructor, coaches are moved to the Professor lane on the salary schedule
  2.  On Initial Appointment - Head coaches will be initially offered a minimum 4-year appointment, and Assistant coaches may be offered up to a 4-year initial appointment
  3. Minimum On Renewal of Appointment -In renewing a coach’s athletic appointment, coaches will be offered a minimum 4-year appointment
  4. No Lower Salary Step on Renewal - In renewing a coach’s athletic appointment, it will not be permissible to lower a coach’s step on the salary schedule
  5. Eliminate the Instructor Salary Schedule

·      Issues and Concerns for Coaches - Other Outcomes:

  1. Coaches are interested in getting Data on

o   How supplemental pay is being paid on each campus

o   Inequities among coaches in rank and salary step

  1. Coaches would like to build in an orientation for new hires, including information about the IFO contract and the Professional Development and Evaluation process (Article 22) relative to coaches
