Alec Sonsteby (he/him) has been elected as the next IFO president.
President-elect Sonsteby is a professor at Metro State University, and has served as department chair in Library and Information Services since 2017.
Sonsteby is serving his fourth term as statewide IFO treasurer, where he oversees the development of the statewide organization's annual budget, as well as its investment portfolio. Locally, he serves on the Metro State faculty association's Executive Committee as Resident Faculty Vice President and as a member of its Meet and Confer Team. Interested in matters of governance, he led the faculty association's rewriting of its constitution and the codification of its first ever set of operating procedures. He received the IFO Board Award for Distinguished Service at the 2024 Delegate Assembly.
Sonsteby earned a BA in Religion from Gustavus Adolphus College, an MS in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and an MBA from Metro State. He also completed the yearlong Minnesota Union Leadership Program (MULP) offered by the Labor Education Service at the University of Minnesota.
Outside of work, Sonsteby serves on the City of Woodbury’s Audit and Investment Commission and on the Board of Directors of Twin Cities Bronze, a professional handbell ensemble.
Alec’s term will begin on July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2028. This will be his first term as IFO president. The IFO constitution limits presidents to serving two terms.
President Jenna Chernega's term ends on June 30, 2026.
